Placement Information

The School we were at was just grade 4 and 5,  children aged 9 and 10. All the teachers and staff were incredibly accomodating and welcoming and were generally excited to have us in the school. Everyone was eager to talk to us and have us visit their classes, and were keen we got the information we needed so were very flexible and helpful. The children were absolutely brilliant-they were incredibly polite and the class we spent most of our time with loved having us in the class with them and were full of questions for us and generally excited to have us with them. All the staff at the school were ready for us coming-our names were up in the office with a little bit about us to remind everyone, and they had name badges ready for us etc. It was a truely lovely school and i would definately recommend going there.

Accomodation

We were lucky enough to stay with friends, and i only noticed one big hotel in the area, but dont know costs. however im sure there are more places if you were to research it, but obviously we didnt have to look into this.

Transport

Colts Neck and the surrounding areas don't offer much in the way of transport links. So a car is needed (if possible) in order to get around.

However there are trains that run into New York but its getting to the station that might be a problem, although you could probably get a taxi.

The trains run pretty regularly during the day about once every 50 minutes or so. The nearest train station to Colts Neck is Aberdeen- Matawan which is about a 15 minute drive.

ocial life

There is things to do both during the day and at night.

However its probably better to go to the next town to Colts Neck which is Redbank if you want a bit more of an atmosphere and night life. There is both a number of restaurants and bars.

The other place that had good nightlife is LongBranch which is situated right on the beach. However this is a more popular place in the summer.

The drinking age in America is 21, and lots of places are quite strict on this especially if it is a bar or a nightclub type place. However you can go into restaurants as long as you are eating, they dont worry too much about you drinking if you are having a meal.

There are loads of nice places to eat in new jersey, and a couple of big shopping malls not too far away from colts neck, aswell as outlet stores. LongBranch is worth a visit if you want to see the beach and it has shops and a few nice bars/cafes and places to eat so good to see both day and night.

Things to do, things not to do

Deinitely visit New York (at least a few times)!!! Its aprox. 1 hour away on the train, and cost about 40 dollars for a return. There is so much to see and do in NY. The Rockefeller Centre is a must!! You have to go right to the top, make sure its a nice day though or you won't see much. The views are definitley worth the money. The statue of liberty is also an iconic thing to do. You can get the ferry to both Liberty Island and Ellis Island from one of two locations. The Jersey Side and Liberty State Park or the New York side and Battery Park. Its only $13 dollars so worth the money. Times Square is also a must see at night. Its even better than on the telly.  Also, theres a lot of comedy club nights which you can get a good deal on if your interested in going, and if your under 21 we were told they arent strict on ID in here.

Useful Contacts

The people we stayed with were our useful contacts, but it could be useful having an embassy number incase you have any problems at the airport or anything if your going on your own. i would just research the local area where youl be, make sure your car has a satnav (a must) and find things out that way regarding contacts for things to do/places to go.

Before you go

Our flights cost Aprox £350 return. youl need an ESTA form to get in the country, but dont mention anything about a placement just say your on a holiday. this is instead of a visa and is very easy to do, you just fill it out on the internet, and print of your information. this cost $14.

Also when your getting travel insurance if your going in the summer you might want to ring up and inquire about prices because it could work out cheaper to get annual cover as 3 weeks is quite expensive anyway.

Its still cold in New Jersey/New York in march (we went from the 5th to the 26th of March) so dont pack for summer!
