Placement Information

This is an elementary school, which is similar to a primary school in the UK, i got in contact with this school through the district email, and this principal was the only one to reply to me. Dr Amanda Lowry was just as excited to have me in her school as I was in going. Any questions I had she was more than willing to anwser and as soon as initial contact was made the rest of the process was really simple and quick and the Dr Lowry being so good and helpful made this.

The school itself was in a wealthy area where taxes were rather high meaning that the schooling was of a better quality, the school itself used to be a middle school meaning they had a lot more space to work with making more opportunities for the students there.

The staff were extremely nice and friendly and had no problems with you asking them questions to help you wiht your assignment, som even gave me contact details if i ever needed to get in contact with them again. They were always happy to hear me speak due to my english accent and are just as intrigued in me and i was with them.

Depending on where you were staying you would need a car or someone with a car to get there as in america places are very spread out.

Accomodation

I was fortunate to be able to stay with family out in New York, so if you have family in different countires around the world then take up on this opportunity, it makes the experience cheaper and i personally had never met my cousin before going and now have an amazing realtionship with her and her friends and already planning in going back and visiting.

Transport

My family were more than willing to drive me the certain places, however there was a train station near by that can be used to go into the city or get around the island, there were also many bus routes so get yourself familiar with the different route of buses and trains and ask locals to help, many people are very friendly towards touists - i found especially english.

Social life

There are many places to eat out, MANY!! try to eat at different places, at the weekend i went into Brooklyn and tried different restaurant there, it gives you the chance to explore different places and different foods. I went to a typical sports bar to receive the best american experience possible.

As you have to be 21 to drink out in America i wasnt able to experience night life, they are very strict on ID, so if you are not 21 you will findit difficult to go out without ID.

Things to do, things not to do

You MUST go into the city of New York! it is very difficult to see it all in one day so make plans to see different areas on different days, if you pay for one of the tours, you actually just drive past the sights, so if you have the time make the tour yourself by planning it in certain areas and then you will be able to explore more of New York and get  better experience of the city rather than just driving through it!  http://www.ny.com/maps/
