Placement Information

Little John's House is a charity run Orphanage in Romania. The owners of the orphanage are the most selfless people I have ever met and the people who run the the home are wonderful. Within the house there are 6 live in "children" aged between 12 and 21. As part of my placement I helped to run a summer school they have, where children from local hospitals and orphanages visit Little John's and take part in activities (Hammer Beading goes down an absolute treat). Activities can include catch, football, painting, sewing, trampolining and many more. Although the summer school does not run as early as our international placement, people from the setting have said they may be able to arrange for something for a group to go and do. In other words, if people want to go they will make use of your time.
The website for the home is: http://littlejohnshouse.org/

Accomodation

Sleeping is in the converted barn in dorms which sleep 6/8 in bunk beds. Although the setting provide you with bedding, to save them washing all your things, if you have space in your case, take a sheet, pillow case and single duvet cover. I just slept under a double duvet cover (it was very hot when we went) . Towels are not included.

Transport

Transport can be arranged with the setting to pick you up from the airport and drop you off (if you fly to Bucharest this is advisable as it's 6 hours and much cheaper through the setting). Transport to tourist destinations in your free time can also be arranged with the setting, they have 2 mini buses. The needs of the children override the volunteers and if the children need the buses there are taxis available. With the exchange rate being roughly 1:4 getting about is fairly cheap.

The orphanage is in a lovely little town, there are a couple of pubs, but these do shut early, if you want to go out Sibiu is the nearest city and is about 30 lei in a taxi.

Social life

Whilst the summer school is running you are only required to work in the mornings, from lunchtime onward (inc. clearing up time) you are free to do what you want. It is an ideal time to prepare for the next day before going to the mud baths/salt lakes. Sibui is in the middle of Transylvania, home to the famous Dracula. His castle is a 2 hour bus ride away and the town there is supposed to be lovely.

There aren't showers at the orphanage, but there is a public swimming baths in Sibui (15 lei entry, or 10 with student card) which has (cold) showers (Well worth it!).

Although all meals are included, they ask you to eat out one night so the ladies in the house can have a night off.

Useful Contacts

Before you go

http://www.onlinefx.com/home This was by far the best exchange rate...useful for most currencies. It was 0.4 higher than the post office and Marks and Spencers. I have used them a few times, if you order your money before lunchtime they can deliver by the next day. Even if you factor in the the postage cost it still works out better than the post office.
