Placement Information

KD Shah and DV Shah English Medium School is based in a small village in Gujarat. It is a full time school for children aged 4- 16. It is a private school, and they have recently decided to add a nursary. The school day starts at 8.30am and finishes at 5pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am- 12pm on Saturdays.

Accommodation

As the School is in a small village, accommodation is most likely to be available in the city approximately a 30 minute drive away. There are local 1- 3 bedroom flats at 1500 rs. a month excluding food costs. However, having family in the village can save time and expenses!

Transport

There is an express train from the city to the village in the early mornings, which takes 20 minutes and the walk from the station to the setting would be another 15 minutes. There are also buses that run every 15 minutes which take up to 45 minutes. The cost for a train ticket would be 200 rs. per seating, and 150 rs for the bus. If however you hire a small car for 2000 rs. a month you are able to reach your destination within 30 minutes. If you decide on hiring a car, prior to arriving in the country you must ensure you have applied for a driving licence for that period of time which isn't much of an issue if you have a clean UK Driving Licence.

Social life

Within the village, there is a small market but apart from that there isn't much to do. The city has many shopping centres with a range of clothes, jewellery and many more items to die for! The culture does not allow small cities as such to have night life, so if you'd like a night out spending a few days after placement in Mumbai would be a good idea.

Things to do, things not to do

Seen as the village is so small, there is not much to do apart from shopping. Booking your holiday for a week or so longer post your time at the setting would allow you to enjoy other parts of India. A visit to Mumbai and enjoy the modern India and it's nightlife. Delhi and Agra have historical monuments such as the Red Fort and the Taj Mahal.

Be aware of pick pockets in busy cities. Take a bag  which is wrapped around you and zipped at all times. Haggle! If you're shopping, know that they already raise the price to make a profit so don't just pay the amount, haggle your way down. And the most obvious, marriage proposals are most definately going to come your way so don't be surprised!
