My placement was at Cambridge High School in Jordan, Amman. This link takes you through to the website of the school - with the gallery available to look through pictures http://www.cambridge.edu.jo/PhotoGallery.aspx
Although it is called a high school, it starts right from kinder-garden and works its way up to 6th form.
Amazing school, staff, children and experience.
I stayed with a family member whilst I completed my placement, and so would be unable to advise on this.
I stayed with a family member whilst I completed my placement, and was given a lift to and home from placement everyday but from what I was told public transport is not advised, buses are not time tabled they will show when they show.
Taxis are fine to use, they are cheap but can be difficult to discuss prices and where you want to go when not being able to speak Arabic.
Social life in Jordan can be difficult as many young people are not permitted to go out alone, but I did go to a couple of restaurants and bars with some of the teachers from school.
Visit rainbow street, this is where young people come together where there are small cafes and bars.
Things to do, things not to do
Make sure you always have at least your shoulders and knees covered with dressing. This is seen as respectful.
You 100% have to visit Petra, it is one of the seven wonders of the world. It costs 50 Dinar to go but you can be there all day and it was worth every single penny! Amazing!
Visit Wadi-Rum and sleep in the dessert under the stars, once in a lifetime experience.
Visit Jerash, roman ruins where more and more is constantly being discovered.
If you want to visit a beach and more tourist area head for Aqaba, lots of small tourist shops and restaurants.
Finally a must is to visit, the Dead Sea. The sea where there is so much salt therefore, you just float!
Eat Falaffel :)
Make sure you have at least 20 Dinar's when you arrive at the airport in Jordan, Amman.
As you have to pay for a visa to come into the country. (If for any reason you did forget this, it isn't a problem there is a cash machine available, but it is easier to have it when you arrive)
In general just make you have cash, cards aren't used very often.
The exchange rate is roughly £1 for 1 Dinar. (This was March 2013, obviously check this)
If you are in the country for more than one month, you have to go to a local police station to get your passport stamped ready for when you go back home. (Although I was only in the country for 3 weeks and 5 days therefore, I did not have to do this)
Book your flights in advance, I would recommend Easy Jet, I got return flight from Gatwick to Jordan, Amman for £280!
No vaccinations needed unless you choose to do so, I did not have any.
