Placement Information

York Montessori Nursery in Fulford within the city of York is a very busy and popular nursery setting. The staff and management aim to provide care and education of the highest quality to both their children and staff. Although the nursery is not 'pure' Montessori it does follow many of the principles of the 'Montessori way' as well as bringing in elements of the EYFS and more recent ways of education.

Accomodation

As my family live in York I was able to live at home during my placement but York has many hotels (can be quite pricey as the nursery is a short walk from the city centre) as well as many bed and breakfasts which offer cheaper rates.

Transport

I traveled on foot as my home is within a 15 minute walking distance but there are many buses which run throughout the city and there is also parking around the nursery if you were to drive. Buses do run regularly throughout the day and the tourist information office is always willing to assist with bus timetables and helping to plan your route.

Social life

York is a beautiful city with many historic features to explore, as well as many shops, great restaurants, local pubs and bars.

Things to do, things not to do

Engage with the staff as they are very willing to offer their knowledge and support you in working alongside the children. During my two weeks I was given many printed pieces of information from different members of staff including blank copies of the sheets they use to record children's progress. (learning journals) I was also supplied with a welcome information sheet explaining a little about the nursery. It is important to stick to the polices when at the nursery including one of the main child protection policies which is regarding not using mobile phones at any time within the nursery setting.

Before you go

Ensure you ring up a week or two before starting the placement just to confirm your attendance and inquire as to what time to arrive etc.

I also asked about clothing at this point. (smart black trousers, suitable top - no low cut tops etc and flat sensible shoes.)
