This primary school is located in Nottingham about 15-20 minutes outside of the city centre. It is a school that keeps very busy with enthusiastic and caring staff. There were about five children in my class from different countries. I was placed with a large class which helped me get a very realistic feel of administering support, working with different abilities and the overall day to day classroom dynamics. Throughout the placement I was able to work with small groups on art projects and was given opportunities to interact with students which broadened my experience working with children and as part of a staff partnership. The classroom teacher was very supportive and allowed me to work with the children with EAL as often as possible to support the international aspect of the placement. Great school for a placement as they love having volunteers, however for an international placement I would recommend a school with more children from different countries, which I have now learned can be found closer to the outer city of Nottingham.
As this is a placement located in Nottingham, Accomadation is not required as it should already be established.
If you do not have your own transportation, there are buses that drop you very close to the school. I was able to catch a 79A which travelled from Arnold straight to the school. Depending where you live the 79, 79A, 17 and 35 travel to the school.
Although this is a local setting I met other students from different universities and colleges, as well as NTU and was able to socialise during break times. There are a number of shops and food places in the area, including a retail park.
Things to do, things not to do
The staff found it helpful when I offered to help where and whenever possible, clearly communicating throughout placement and asking questions are good to do to get the most of your experience.
The School number is 0115-915-1506, the office staff are very helpful!!
Since it is local, going to the school (as long as it has been arraged prior) to view the school and meet some of the children and understand different policies, dress code, and procedures can be a bonus.
