The Home and Life Foundation is an orphanage located in Phang Nga in the South of Thailand. The people at the orphanage are very welcoming and treat you like a part of their family.The providers and children spoke very good English which meant communication on a day to day basis was not hard. The children go to school every day; however at the time we were there some had started to break up for their summer holiday. Some were also in a position to visit family members during their holiday period. Each morning we were given tasks between us for the day and we were given regular breaks. We helped to do gardening with the children, played with them when they returned from school and taught them English. We also helped with the upkeep of the orphanage by helping with the cooking, cleaning and laundry on some days. The children were very talented, some could paint and draw very well, play instruments and they all enjoyed music and singing. They were also very helpful when we needing anything. We were taken by the providers to the school that some of the children went to where we went to teach the children in kindergarten English. We were also taken to visit a waterfall and a nearby beach with the children. On Saturdays children go along with a worker from the orphanage to the local market to sell homemade muffins and cookies for the orphanage which were able to go to as well which was rewarding.
The orphanage provided us with a room on site which was very basic. One room for the four us, four single beds, four fans, and a fridge in the room (they provided bottled water which we could take form their bakery when necessary). The bathroom was very basic, cold showers (fine after the first day and needed on the really hot and humid days) and a toilet. Toilet roll was provided when we asked. Insect repellent is necessary as we were all regularly bitten. The price of food was included in the accommodation cost and that consisted of three meals a day. Cereal or toast for breakfast with a choice of fruit, juice or tea at 8am. Lunch at 12pm and dinner at around 6pm were either noodles or rice accompanied by vegetables or chicken, fish or pork on some days. Wifi was accessible in the room and also available in the bakery where we ate our lunch and dinner and were allowed to stay in our free time. We were also allowed to use the washing machines at the orphanage to do our own laundry.
The orphanage provided a transport link for us to get to the location from Phuket airport which took around 45 minutes and was fairly cheap between the four us. Buses were accessible about 20 minutes away from the orphanage and the workers were happy to take us to the bus stops. However, you need to ensure you know the correct colour bus to get on for your destination as they all come at different times throughout the day.
