Placement Information

The placements are based in schools around the area of Khao Lak.

The children are a range of ages, the children may also not necessarily all be Thai you could be teaching at a school with Burmese children for example. Ken the coordinator for Original Volunteers/ Volunteer Teacher Thailand offers planning sessions, this is to provide you with time to plan your lessons.

Each week you get a choice of lessons you can teach and choose 4 of them, you then plan them and rotate them so each class at the school gets 1 of each lesson.

When you get to the schools, you will usually get introduced to the priniciple of the school, and then given time to prepare and get your lessons set up. The lessons are usually 45 minutes to 1 hour long. In the lesson you will first do the main teaching of the subject testing the children and getting them to memorise what you are doing. The children will then be given a worksheet to complete and then when they have finished that, usually a word search. This is then repeated until all of the classes have had all of the lessons.

When teaching the lessons, you will teach in pairs so do not worry about having to handle a class of 30 children on your own. The coordinators are also around to step in when you need the help and usually the schools teachers too.

The food at lunch time gets provided by the school.

Accomodation

The accommodation based in Khao Lak, is a guest house called Walkers Inn. It is run by a friendly family, Andy, his wife Joo and their daughter Enya. There is a girls dorm and a boys dorm. The rooms have fans, and sometimes air con if requested. There is a bathroom in the girls dorm with a heated shower, and also 3 other showers in the mixed bathroom across the hall.

The accommodation costs 150 TBH per night for a volunteer which is around £3 per night.

When volunteering some of your schools may be far from Khao Lak meaning you have to stay somewhere closer to the school. The accommodation is sorted out for you by the coordinators and also paid for as it is included in your price for Original Volunteers.

Transport

Every morning for school, you get taken to school by either a taxi or the coordinators themselves. This does not cost you anything, and they also take you back to Khao Lak or your accommodation when the school day is finished.

When traveling around Thailand the taxis/bus are cheapest as they usually do quite cheap deals if there are more of you.

Social life

There are plenty of things to do in Thailand when you have spare time. There are amazing beaches to visit, markets, bars/restaurants at night. In Khao Lak it becomes alive a night, all of the locals are really friendly. There is a live music bar called Happy Snappers that is a very popular destination if you have some free time at night it is very reccommended and the music is excellent.
