In the December before my placement, the following March i had my induction in which i was shown around the yard and shown where all the important things where as well as the general yard routine explained. When i arrived on my first day i was very welcomed into the setting as well as being shown where i could keep my belongings. The general routine of the day was clearing the arena ready for the first session (normally 10am) and preparing any horses for their sessions. When clients arrived i welcomed them and ensured they had correctly fitted riding hats (as i am horsey myself, i know how to fit - i would always ask for help if unsure), once clients were ready to mount, i either assisted with getting them on or lead the horse or pony in the arena. I also assisted with lessons, whether that be leading a horse, side walking or help with hoisting. When lessons's weren't happening, i assisted with the yard chores such as filling haynets and mucking out stables. The owner of the centre Dawn Whitmore Kirby, was extremely helpful with supporting me in getting the right information and resources which would help with my degree. She was more than happy to contact clients to see if i had permission to use their letters and write ups etc... She was also very knowledgeable and was happy to answer any questions i had. Overall, my placement experience has given me a wider understanding of various disabilities and Dawn had lots of knowledge about these to help me when i had a question. If you are looking to work with special needs children or adults, i highly recommend my placement and the WENLO centre.
As this placement was in the neighbouring city to Nottingham, (and i live at home which is Nottingham for me) i stayed at home.
As i drive, i was able to drive to my placement, but i do believe the road that the centre is on doesn't have a bus route so check carefully.
Things to do, things not to do
Ensure you have suitable footwear such as wellies so that you do not dirty any nice shoes you have. A coat/jumper is also strongly recommended as its at the top of a valley and even on hot sunny days, it did get a little chilly.
