Placement Information

Crocus Fields is a residential and outreach service that offers a range of short breaks for young people aged between 8 and 19 years who have learning disabilities, physical disabilities and autistic spectrum disorders. The short breaks are  designed to meet the needs of the young people. There are two units within Crocus Fields. The short breaks are 2 nights during the week and 3 nights at the weekend.  Each unit is made as homely as possible and provides single bedrooms, some with en-suite bathrooms, to meet the needs of physically disabled young people. There is also a soft play room, a sensory room and large and small lounges where the young people are able to relax and spend some quiet time as well as spending time doing activities and playing with the toys. The building and the grounds are made safe and secure in order to offer the young people the protection they need.

Young people have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of activities that include art and craft. sports, small group holidays, day trips and much more. The main aim of Crocus Fields is to give young people opportunities that will enable them to develop in a safe and caring environment.

Crocus Fields staff work closely with families, schools and other agencies to determine the best ways to enable the young person to develop. Each child will be allocated a key worker. Through consultation the key worker will develop a clear plan that will help us to provide the most effective care possible.

The team at Crocus Fields are highly motivated and qualified. There is a high staff ratio with a minimum of 3 Residential Support Workers supporting seven young people in one unit and 3 Residential Support Workers providing support to 4 young people whose primary needs relate to physical disabilities and complex health needs. We also have night staff who ensure the safety and meet the needs of the young people during night-time hours.

Crocus Fields was an amazing placement. The 3 weeks I spent working within the team were a huge insight into what career path I want to take once I graduate. The team made me feel very welcome and part of the team, and the young people were an absolute pleasure to look after.

Accommodation

Whilst on placement I stayed at my term time address, on Clifton Campus. Getting to placement was easy as Crocus Fields is in the Meadows Area of Nottingham and is on the bus routes from Campus to the city.

Transport

I travelled from Clifton Campus on the number 1 but can also catch the number 4 to Lammas Gardens. If travelling away from the city then you could also catch the number 1 or 4 to Lammas Gardens.

Timetables can be accessed at https://www.nctx.co.uk/timetables-tickets-maps/buses-lines

Social life

As placement is in Nottingham I didn't have much to explore but if you are new to Nottingham and the local area there are many things to do. In Nottingham you will be spoilt for choice, whether it be intellectual, sporting, social and cultural pursuits as Nottingham is a popular and multicultural city. The city is also renowned for being a trendy with bags of personality and culture.

If you are looking for something other than a night out then I would recommend looking at http://www.experiencenottinghamshire.com/things-to-do for some ideas.

Useful Contacts

I contacted Andy Hodkin who is one of the Unit Mangers at Crocus Fields, to arrange my Placement. His email address is Andrew.Hodkin@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

Before you go

Before I went on placement I arrange to meet with Andy a few times before I started placement. He was lovely and gave me a lot of information about Crocus Fields so I knew what to expect when I started placement.
