Placement Information

Working alongside a Participation Officer to organise and support children in care. Developing life story work project to inform children who are in care or adopted of their basic history of their life and family history. However, as there are approximately 350 children in the Wakefield District in care, this job is hard to complete as it is an on going project and social workers are  inundated with up to 35 cases each. The participation team try and support and help social workers to undertake this role, as I did on my placement there. The participation team also try and get children's voices to be heard when attending meetings with senior staff. In order to do this they have a Children in Care Council that I worked alongside to help interview a new Senior Manager for Safeguarding and Standards. I also created and dispatched surveys and questionnaires to young people to ask them how they feel about the life story project. I also helped update and create new sections on the care4us website found at www.care4us.co.uk

Accomodation

I personally am from the Wakefield District so stayed at home but there are local hotels, B&Bs and Travelodges near by.  This will be available on the internet.

Transport

WMDC Calder Vale offices are located close to the 110 bus route and Wakefield Kirkgate train station. There is also an accessible car park located at the rear.

Social life

The social life in Wakefield is vibrant and lively. There are a few night clubs and a pub crawl that is enjoyable.  There are also a few bars depending on your taste; there is reflex with 80's - now music and boomerangs with chart music.

Night clubs include Havana.

Things to do, things not to do

I would definitely recommend going for walks around Pugneys or Newmiller Dam. There are also a few local shopping centres such as White Rose and Meadowhall.  Elland Road football ground, home to Leeds United, is also close by - about 15 minutes. As is Leeds Town Centre (a half an hour bus ride from Wakefield bus station).
